JAIPUR: The Jaipur police registered a case of rape against an unidentified person, after a class-XI girl in the city gave birth to a child at a hospital on December 28.
Sodala SHO Haripal Singh told TOI that the 17-year-old pregnant girl was admitted to a government hospital on December 28. As per the rules, the hospital staff informed the police about the minor’s pregnancy following which, cops were sent to verify the matter.
The police spoke to her parents but they remained cagey. Finally, a case was registered by the Sodala police station under multiple sections of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. “The case has been registered against an unidentified person. We will speak to the girl and her family,” Singh said. The sources told TOI that the family had claimed ignorance and told the cops they were not aware of their daughter’s pregnancy until at a later stage. However, the police suspect that parents kept her pregnancy under tight wraps for unknown reasons.
The family has not named any accused or divulged any more details. The police said that the family should have informed them about the case early. “The suspect could be some family acquaintance due to which the parents could have been compelled to keep the case a secret. Nonetheless, it is an offence as per the law and will be investigated accordingly,” added the official.
The girl studied at a private school and stopped attending classes for the past seven months. The parents said that they were not aware of their daughter’s pregnancy until doctors broke the shocking news to them. The police said that all help will be extended to the family members, “We have told them they have nothing to fear. We will record her statements and proceed with the investigation,” the official said.
