CM N Biren Singh: 79 Rohingya held in Manipur during 2011-18

IMPHAL: Manipur CM N Biren Singh on Wednesday informed the assembly that 79 illegal Rohingya migrants were arrested in Manipur between 2011 and 2018. Out of them, 52 were sent back after completion of their jail term while the remaining 27 are still serving their prison term under the Foreigners Act, he added.

Biren added that local residents had helped the illegal Rohingya migrants to enter Manipur.

Two local residents of Moreh had been involved in providing them with duplicate Aadhaar cards, he further said, adding that the two accused are on the run. He said 50 additional state police personnel have been sent to the Jiribam district recently to tighten security, especially in the border areas.

Biren also said the Manipur government has urged the Centre to start a process to draft a National Register of Citizens in Manipur in order to check illegal infiltration.
