Coaches placed at 14 stations to house patients

BENGALURU: The South Western Railway ( SWR ) has set up special coaches that can serve as care centres for Covid-19 patients at KSR Bengaluru City terminal and 13 other major stations.

The coaches will fill a shortage of beds in case coronavirus infections shoot up and hospitals are overwhelmed. The 13 stations are: Hubballi, Mysuru, Yeswanthpur, Harihar, Shivamogga, Hospete, Hassan, Arsikere, Bagalkot, Talaguppa, Vijayapura, Belagavi and Vasco da Gama (Goa).

“The ministry of railways has initiated conversion of coaches into Covid Care Centres to provide additional beds for patients. These coaches will be used to house suspected and confirmed cases, who are categorised as very mild/mild,” SWR said. There will be separate coaches for suspected and confirmed Covid-19 patients.

“As per standard operating procedure, each person will be assigned an individual cabin. If the situation warrants, up to two confirmed patients will be assigned a cabin,” SWR said. “We have modified 320 passenger coaches, above the target of 312 coaches.”
