Coimbatore: Siruvani Reservoir level dips, nears dead storage

COIMBATORE: Lack of rainfall in the catchment areas and constant drawing of water from the Siruvani Reservoir has pushed down the water level close to the dead storage level or the minimum supply level. Water level stood at 1.58m above the dead storage level on Tuesday.

The city corporation supplies water from the Siruvani Reservoir to 24 wards.

Water from the Aliyar reservoir is supplied to seven wards and another seven wards get water under Bhavani scheme. Water from the Pillur Reservoir is supplied to the rest of the wards in the city.

At present, water level at the Siruvani Reservoir stands at 865.02m against the dead storage level of 863.40m. The Pillur Reservoir is almost close to its full capacity.

The water requirement of the city is 247MLD. The corporation is planning to provide over 200MLD through pipelines and the rest through water trucks.

The corporation is confident of avoiding a water scarcity like the one in 2016, a senior official said. “Drinking water could be supplied till the end of June,” he told TOI. “We are confident that the city will get good monsoon rain like the previous year. If the monsoon fails, then we will have to pump water to ensure supply. Just by pumping water, we would be able to supply water for two months.”

Acknowledging that the civic body has reduced the quantity of water consumed from Siruvani Reservoir, the official said that to compensation the lack of water from the reservoir, they have been supplying water from Pillur Reservoir through water trucks. “Water supply was delayed by a few days in those 24 wards. We have been working on to reduce the interval between the supplies,” he added.
