Concert at park launched by Greater Chennai Corporation for 'City of Music'

CHENNAI: Remaining true to its ‘City of Music’ tag under the Unesco’s Creative Cities Network for its contribution to music, Greater Chennai Corporation launched the ‘concerts at the park’ initiative on Saturday at the Anna Tower Park. They plan to host such music concerts in which both professional and amateur artists (singers and dancers) will perform every weekend.

About 42 such big parks in the city have been identified that have an open amphitheatre to take music closer to the residents. More people will be encouraged to take part in these concerts and the slots will be fixed by an advisory group formed under the leadership of joint commissioner, revenue, R Lalitha. The group has representatives from Aanmajothi, the Kalakshetra foundation, The Music Academy, The Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan and Sruti magazine and will enable artists to collaborate with 180 other cities identified under the creative cities network across the globe.

On Saturday, folk art forms from Tamil Nadu and other parts of the country were performed by students from Kalakshetra. Combination of Nadaswaram with Bharatnatyam also enthralled the park users who had gathered in huge numbers.

R Lalitha said, “We want to take art to common public and not just one type of music. We want to bring different genres of music that the city is known for and popularise it across the city. We will also use this opportunity to promote children from corporation schools to utilise these opportunities.”
