Congress councillor tries to run over cop in Sirohi

Jodhpur: A Congress councillor allegedly tried to run over a policeman with a tractor in Sheoganj in Sirohi on Saturday morning when the police seized vehicles laden with sand (bajri) belonging to him at Badgaon village.

The first-time councillor, 38-year-old Alpesh Gehlot, later fled from the spot with one of the vehicles and was untraceable till night.

Meanwhile, attempts were said to have begun to suppress the matter by the counsellor using his political influence.

According to police sources, based on a report from control room that illegal sand mining was taking place, a team of two constables was sent to the spot. “They caught two tractors of sand in Nehru Nagar area and brought one tractor to the police station while the other was steered by one of the constables himself,” said the police.

In no time, councillor Alpesh Gehlot rushed to the spot allegedly and pulled the constable down from driver seat abusing him allegedly with cast innuendos.

He took over the seat of the vehicle and tried to speed away. When the constable tried to stop him, the counsellor attempted to run over him. The constable, managed to escape unhurt but he could not stop Gehlot from speeding away.

According to the sources, Gehlot has been engaged in illegal sand mining since log and keep stock of the sand near his house for further supply. After the information, swinging into action, the mining department has seized about 130 ton sand deposits from his place.

Though, the victim constable has given a complaint against the counsellor for caste based comments and causing disturbance in government duty, no case, till night, however, had been registered against the counsellor except a report of threatening in ``rojnamcha’’ (police ledger).

“There was a report in rojnamcha about the councillor threatening the policeman of dire consequences if he tried to mess with his affairs,” said Laxman Singh, SHO, Sheoganj.
