Congress declares Dharamshala as second capital of Himachal Pradesh

DHARAMSHALA: Himachal politicians sitting in power in ruling BJP have been landed in a fix amid byelections over the issue of a second capital in Himachal Pradesh .

Days after top BJP leader denied of any need of second capital at Dharamshala, the Congress party on Wednesday took official stand declaring this hill town as the second capital of Himachal Pradesh.

A notification has already been made during the Congress regime in the state.

Leader of Opposition, Mukesh Agnihotri accompanied by other prominent leaders made a declaration. He said that their party has decided that it accept Dharamshala as second capital and will implement the same after coming to power.

Congress addressed a press conference, they also demanded that BJP should tender a public apology for issuing statements over not giving capital status to this hill town.

"BJP leaders have said that town has no infrastructure for making it a capital, but this place has second corporation of state like Shimla. Our leaders have already established an assembly complex here, the mini secretariat is already here," added Agnihotri.

It was this week only when former Union minister and BJP leader Shanta Kumar during campaigning for the party has said that there was no need of the second capital status for Dharamshala. This has escalated the political discontent.

Congress leaders said that they were going to declare Dharamshala as second capital during their regime only and therefore, after Shimla only Dharamshala was sanctioned corporation.

Accusing ruling BJP, Agnihotri said that sitting government not sanctioned staff and funds to corporation. "The only reason for victimizing Dharamshala by BJP was that Congress had brought major projects like Corporation and Smart City," he added.

They further told media persons that sitting government has spoiled major projects to this town like tulip garden, IT park and Central University claiming that all were brought by Congress.

BJP former CM PK Dhumal reacting to this issue said that Congress has done everything in papers while it was during his tenure that mini secretariat was established, and ministers started sitting at Dharamshala.
