Congress nominee fails to answer queries, faces protest in Sangrur

PATIALA: The Congress candidate from Sangrur, Kewal Singh Dhillon, faced a spur-of-the-moment protest by the residents of Bahadurpur village in Sangrur district on Saturday, after he could not answer queries on promises made by the Congress before it came to power in Punjab.

A video of the protest was in circulation on WhatsApp.

However, only the protesters were visible in it and not the Congress leader. The protesters had asked Dhillon about chief minister Amarinder Singh’s failure to meet promises of paying an unemployment allowance of Rs 2,500 per month, eradicating the drug menace in four months, and arresting accused in desecration cases. “We heard his entire speech and later some of us had gone to him to ask him why he had come to beg for votes when his government had failed to meet promises,” said Rajveer Singh, a resident of Bahadurpur

Dhillon could not be contacted for comment. An official at Sunam police station, under whose jursidiction the village falls, confirmed the incident, but said no case had been registered as there was no violence or law and order trouble.

According to Rajveer, he and a group of youngsters from the village had taken the mic and asked Dhillon about the promises, but Congress workers took the mic away from them. “After this, some other villagers appreciated our step and started raising slogans against Dhillon. We are not against or in favour of anyone, but we will ask these leaders about work done,” Rajveer added.
