Congress passes resolution to contest in Nanguneri assembly bypoll

MADURAI: The Congress on Friday made it clear that it would contest in the Nanguneri assembly byelection in Tamil Nadu . A resolution to this effect was passed at a meeting of the party at Nanguneri in Tirunelveli district.

The party also indicated that it would contest in the bypoll without an alliance if situation demanded so.

This seat became vacant after party MLA H Vasanthakumar won the recent Lok Sabha elections from Kanyakumari.

The Congress won the Nanguneri seat in the DMK alliance in 2016.

A bypoll will be held in Nanguneri soon. DMK’s recently appointed youth wing secretary Udhayanidhi Stalin has expressed his opinion that the party should contest in the bypoll. This raised the expectations of the local DMK members, who were gearing up to seek a ticket.

It is under these circumstances that the Congress executive committee meeting held in Nanguneri passed the resolution. Tamil Nadu Congress Committee president K S Alagiri presided over the meeting.
