Constable from Ahmedabad hangs himself from tree in Shihor

A constable at Khokhra police station in Ahmedabad committed suicide by hanging himself from a tree at a hill near his native Shihor on Friday evening. According to the police the constable was engaged to be married for the past five months and the lockdown had pushed back his wedding date.

Ashok Nathabhai Chailana (33), a constable at Khokhra police station and a native of Rajivnagar, near Bhang ni factory, Shihor in Bhavnagar district had gone on a leave for three days to visit his ailing father.

On Friday he left his house and climbed a hill about two kms from his house and hung himself.

The police said he has not left behind any suicide note and was believed to have been bearing the entire expense of his family that has a two brothers, a father and mother. His elder brother was staying separately from the family.

Shihor PI K D Gohil said, "We have registered a complaint of accidental death. He has not left behind a suicide note and his family has assigned no reason for his death."

Gohil said he has talked to the Khokhra police station and had learnt that he had taken leave to visit his father who was unwell. "A postponement of wedding plans due to lockdown is unlikely to be a reason for the suicide. We will be questioning the family as well as the betrothed’s family members to investigate the reason."

Khokhra PSI Y S Gamit said, "He was always smiling and he lived alone while his family is in Shihor. He had sought three days leave to visit his family as his father was not well. We do not known why he took the extreme step."
