Cops arrest man who fired shots in Jodhpur

Ahmedabad: Akash Parmar, 30, was arrested by city cops on Monday for firing shots at a business rival and injuring a man who’d tried to apprehend him on Saturday night in Jodhpur area of Satellite. Police seized a country-made pistol and two live cartridges from Parmar, a resident of Jodhpur after he was arrested from Sanathal crossroads.

On Sunday, police officials had claimed Parmar had fired shots from a starter gun and not a real gun. However, seizure of the country-made weapon changed their narrative. Inspector S J Baloch of Anandnagar police station said, “We came to know about the weapon only after arresting the accused from Sanathal crossroads on Monday evening. Before that, we could not ascertain what type of weapon was used in the attack.”

Police officials said that a resident of Jodhpur, Jashwantsinh Thakor, 45, was sitting outside the office of his cousin, Mahesh Thakor, a cable operator, when four shots were fired at him in Jodhpur village.

“Parmar, who had a longstanding enmity with Thakor, had pulled out a pistol and fired shots at him. The shots missed Thakor, whose cries for help made Mahesh Thakor’s staff run towards Parmar to apprehend him. But Parmar slashed the hand of one of the staff members and fled,” said a police official.

Officials said that a 15-year-old rivalry over business of construction, TV cable operations and moneylending between Parmars and Thakors was the reason behind attack. Two months ago, Mahesh Thakor had filed an FIR with Satellite police against Akash Parmar alleging that he had assaulted him. After this, Parmar decided to take revenge against Thakor, said a police official. About four months ago, Parmar too had filed an FIR with Anandnagar police against Mahesh Thakor, complaining of an assault.
