Cops bust sedative drug-making unit in Visakhapatnam, 10 arrested

VISAKHAPATNAM: City police arrested ten persons in connection with two sedative drug-making units on the outskirts of Visakhapatnam on Saturday and seized machinery worth Rs 41.19 lakh. This is the first time that such units have been found in the city.


PM Palem police and city task force personnel conducted raids at two houses in Rushikonda on receiving reliable information.

The accused had set up the machinery in different houses for carrying out their illegal trade.

City police commissioner Rajeev Kumar Meena told the media that the kingpins of illegal trade, Sampath and Pedababu, were absconding. Most of the accused are from other states, such as Bihar, Odisha, Uttar Pradesh.

Cops raided a house in Rushikonda and seized drums, sewing machines, various mixing machines, weighing machines, tobacco powder and other material to make sedative drugs , besides 45 kg of ganja.

Another team of cops raided the second house near a corporate school in Rushikonda, where they found similar packing and sedative drug-making units, besides 36 kg of ganja. PM Palem circle inspector RVRK Chowdary, sub-inspector Harikrishna, and task force cops conducted the raids. Cases were registered under Sections 272, 273, 328 of the IPC and Section 8c, 20 (b)(ii), 25 and 27 of the NDPS Act, 1985.
