Coronavirus in Tamil Nadu: Southern districts see dip in fresh Covid-19 cases

CHENNAI: Tamil Nadu reported 108 deaths and 5,063 fresh Covid-19 cases on Tuesday, which pushed the toll to 4,349 and case tally to 2,68,285.

Chennai continues to report the maximum number of cases and deaths. On Tuesday, the city logged 1,023 cases and reported 23 deaths compared to 1,021 cases and 20 deaths on Monday.



The three adjoining districts – Chengalpet (245), Kancheepuram(220) and Tiruvallur (358) -- together logged 823 cases and 20 deaths. With this. the region has reported 1,846 cases and 43 deaths.


The other districts in the north reported 900 cases and 12 deaths. Cuddalore (264), Kallakurichi (149), Tiruvannamalai (132), Vellore (160) reported a high number of cases.
The northern region has 30,083 active cases


Many southern districts saw a dip in the number of cases. The ten districts together reported 1,525 cases and 34 deaths. With 40 cases, Madurai recorded the lowest number of fresh cases in the zone along with Tenkasi (45) and Ramanathapuram (47).

Virudhunagar (424) continued to report the highest number of cases.

Other districts to report cases in three digits were Kanyakumari (128), Sivagangai (141), Theni (292), Tuticorin (189) and Tirunelveli(155). Kanyakumari recorded nine deaths, Tirunelveli logged six while Madurai, Theni and Tenkasi recorded four each.

There are 15,841 people still under treatment.

While the western zone reported 398 cases, districts in the central zone reported 381 cases. Coimbatore reported 228 cases, while all other districts in the central and western regions reported a double digit rise.

Tirupur reported eight cases. Perambalur reported four and Dharmapuri recorded two cases.

With 14 more deaths, the cumulative death toll in the west rose to 183 compared to 166 in the central region. Both the regions have around 4,500 active cases each.
