Couple commits suicide in Agra over 'marital discord'

Agra: A married couple allegedly committed suicide in Albatiya of Jagdispura police jurisdiction of Agra city on Thursday. The woman hung herself, while the man consumed a bottle of acid. The couple had three children.

The two deceased were identified as Priyanka Singh (27) and Anil Singh (29). This was 50th case of couple related suicide in western Uttar Pradesh in last 26 months.

Station house officer of Jagdispura, Sanjay Kumar Pandey, said, “The exact reason behind the couple’s suicide is not yet known as none of their relatives gave any written complaint. The woman hung herself inside her house at around noon, while her husband consumed acid four hours later.”

Anil’s younger brother Rahul Singh said, “Priyanka and brother Anil were married for eight years and have three teenage sons – Kaushal (7), Rajat (5) and Ayush (3). The couple was often engaged in quarrel, but I don’t know the exact reason for this extreme step.”

Anil used to work in a shoe factory. According to sources, Priyanka wanted to visit her parents in Fatehpur Sikri, but Anil was not ready to take her and there were frequent quarrels as well.

The couple was later cremated by family members.
