Couple enters Dhalai district of Tripura from Covid hotspot in Bangladesh; locals question BSF role

Ambassa(Tripura)/UNI: The incident of a couple intruding into the bordering subdivision of Gandacharra in the northern Tripura district of Dhalai from COVID-19 hotspot Khagrachari in Bangladesh, has partially revealed how the BSF personnel in the district are getting infected in large numbers, sources said.

A couple from bordering Harimangal village panchayat identified as Radichandra Chakma(43) and his wife Bhagyashree Chakma (37) had gone to Bhagyashrees paternal home at Khagracharri in Bangladesh.

After residing in the COVID-19 hotspot for more than two months they returned to India through un-fenced border at Chaplingchara on May 17.

The matter remained suppressed till the local inhabitants informed the administration today.

After receiving information, Sub Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) of Gandacharra, Dashiram Riang and the OC of the local police station reached the spot and instructed them to go under home quarantine.

However, the role of 164 battalion of BSF deployed in that part of the border for stopping illegal movement came under big question as local people alleged that the BSF men allowed the intrusion against monetary benefit.

The Commanding Officer of 164 battalion completely denied their responsibility stating the area is not under their jurisdiction though the Superintendent of Police (SP) admitted that the area is indeed under the surveillance of 164 battalion of BSF.
