COVID-19: India Continues to Report more than 6,000 Cases Daily; Death Toll Up to 4,167

May 26: The spread of the novel coronavirus has shown no indication of slowing down—India has, in the last two weeks, registered more confirmed cases than it did in the first 100 days since the beginning of the COVID-19 outbreak in the country.

Having recorded 6,535 new cases and 146 new fatalities in the last 24 hours, the countrywide case tally has now touched 1,45,380.

Out of the total cases reported so far, 80,722 remains active, while 60,490 people have been cured of the infection. In the past 24 hours at least 2,769 infected people have also been cured. Till now 4,167 deaths have been reported in India from across the country.

In India, Maharashtra continues to be the worst impacted states of the country. It alone accounts for 36 per cent caseload of the total confirmed cases in the entire country. Maharashtra has reported 52,667 cases and 1,695 fatalities, followed by Tamil Nadu (17,082) and Gujarat (14,460 cases).

In terms of deaths, after Maharashtra, the highest fatality numbers are reported from Gujarat (888) and Madhya Pradesh (300).

According to the ministry of health data, the national capital has reported 14,053 cases and 276 deaths.

Other states and Union territories with more than 6,000 cases are Rajasthan (7,300), Madhya Pradesh (6,859), Uttar Pradesh (6,532).

India is now among the ten countries worst hit by the pandemic that has over 5 million cases worldwide.

Number of containment zones in Delhi increases to 91

On Monday, the Delhi government announced, that the total number of containment zones in the national capital has reached 91. To the list of the existing containment zones, the government added four new ones on Monday.

The government said, one zone has been sealed in North-West and South-East districts each, and two new containment zones have been formed in the South-East district.

So far, 41 zones have been de-contained, as per the data shared by the Delhi government on Monday, including 10 in the East district, which reported the highest containment zones.

There are 16 containment zones in the North district, followed by South district (15), South-East district (14), South-West district (12), North-West district (11), Central district (8), Shahdara (6), North-East district (4), New Delhi district (3). While East and West districts have just one active zone each.

Gujarat's tally mounts to 14,468

Gujarat on Monday reported 405 new cases of COVID-19, the number has now climbed to 14,468 in the state. While in the last 24 hours, the state witnessed 30 new deaths, taking the toll to 888.

According to reports, the Health authorities have carried out a total of 3,492 tests in the past 24 hours. Out of these number, about 405 have been tested positive. In the state, Ahmedabad has reported the maximum number of cases at 310, followed by Surat (31), Vadodara (18), Sabarkantha (12), and Mahisagar (7).

Since the beginning of the month, the state has been reporting over 20 deaths daily and the trend continued on Monday with 30 more people falling prey to the deadly virus.

On Monday, a total of 224 patients were discharged. Till now, 6,636 people have recovered from the disease in Gujarat.

At present, there are over 4.4 lakh people quarantined in the state, 4,31,046 under home quarantine, 10,789 in government facilities and 762 in private facilities.

Global Cases

Worldwide the number of cases stands at 5,497,538. The highest number of cases has been reported from the United States 1,662,768 followed by Brazil (374,898), Russia (353,427) and United Kingdom (262,547).

In terms of deaths, the deadly virus has taken lives of 3,46,232 people worldwide. As on May 26, about 22,32,593 people have recovered from the COVID-19 disease across the globe.
