Covid-19: Three deaths, 94 cases in Kerala on Thursday

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: In its highest single-day tallies, Kerala on Thursday reported 94 Covid-19 cases and three deaths. The total number of Covid deaths in the state rose to 15, including Mahe native Mehroof, while 1,588 cases are reported so far.


The deceased are Meenakshi Amma (73) of Kadampazhipuram, Palakkad; Shabnaz (27) of Edappal, Malappuram and Xavier (65) of Kavanadu, Kollam.

Meenakshi Amma, who came from Chennai on May 25, died on Tuesday while her test results came on Thursday. She was diabetic and was admitted to Palakkad district hospital on May 29 following complaints of pneumonia.

Shabnaz had returned from the UAE on May 25 for treatment of cancer and was admitted to a private hospital in Kozhikode. She died on Wednesday and her samples, sent after she developed respiratory problems, tested positive on Thursday. Xavier, meanwhile, was found dead in his house and brought to Kollam district hospital on June 1. He had no travel history but his samples were tested under the directive of the medical board.

Of the new cases, 47 persons came from abroad and 37 from other states. Seven persons got infected through contact. Of these, 14 are in Pathanamthitta, 12 in Kasaragod, 11 in Kollam (including Xavier), 10 in Kozhikode, eight each in Alappuzha and Malappuram (including Shabnaz), seven in Palakkad (including Meenakshi Amma), six in Kannur, five each in Thiruvananthapuram and Kottayam, four in Thrissur and two each in Ernakulam and Wayanad.

As many as 1,70,065 people are under surveillance, of whom 1,68,578 are under home/institutional quarantine and 1,487 admitted to designated isolation facilities. Till date, 76,383 samples (including augmented ones) have been sent for tests, of which 72,139 came negative. Besides, 15,264 of the total 18,146 samples taken from priority groups as part of sentinel surveillance also tested negative. As many as 3,787 samples were collected for tests on Thursday, as against 4,004 samples on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, the test results of 39 Covid-19 patients under treatment came negative on Thursday. Of these, 13 are from Palakkad (including a Malappuram native), eight from Malappuram, seven from Kannur (including a Kozhikode native), five from Kozhikode, two from Thrissur and Wayanad, and one each from Thiruvananthapuram and Pathanamthitta.
