Curfew reimposed in Srinagar after government claims peace in Jammu and Kashmir: NDTV

Curfew is reported to have been reimposed in Srinagar on Sunday, on the eve of the Muslim festival of Eid. Residents, according to NDTV

news channel, has been asked to return to their homes.

The latest decision to reimpose curfew in Srinagar on the eve of Eid comes after the government and local police claimed that the situation in the valley was peaceful. A tweet by Kashmir zone police had read on Friday, “Situation in Valley has remained normal today. No untoward incident has been reported. At selective locations restriction was lifted temporarily.”

Director-General of Police Dilbagh Singh too had said that there were no major incidents of violence in the state barring a few incidents of stone-pelting. Pro-government media channels had reported a new video of National Security Advisor Ajit Doval in conversation with local shepherds. This was widely being projected as a sign of life returning to normalcy in the valley even after the abrogation of Article 370 in the state, now converted into Union Territory.

The government had lifted the restrictions for Friday prayers and Eid, scheduled to be celebrated this Monday.

Quoting local sources, NDTV reported that police vehicles were seen making announcements on loudspeakers asking people to return to their homes, and shopkeepers were told to pull down their shutters.

On Saturday, BBC News had broadcast videos of widespread protests and police firing tear gas to control the angry crowd. The local police had

the claims made by the BBC as wrong while asking the foreign media agencies to act responsibly.
