Cyclone Bulbul brings more rainfall to Kerala

KOCHI: Cyclone Bulbul which is raging in the Bay of Bengal is bringing the next round of rainfall to Kerala. Accompanied by light winds, its effect is visible in all the southern states. Also, a cyclonic circulation is likely to form over extreme south Tamil Nadu. This is will bring rain to Thiruvananthapuram and Kollam.




IMD has sounded a yellow alert (heavy rainfall of 7-11cm) in three districts including Idukki, Kollam and the capital. Sea conditions will be rough to very rough in northwest Bay of Bengal.



Fishermen have been asked to stay off these waters for the next couple of days by which time the cyclone Bulbul is expected to weaken.

For the west coast, the cyclonic circulation persists over northeast Arabian Sea and adjoining south Gujarat coast extending upto 2.1km. A trough from this system will extend up to south Maharashtra in the lower levels.

Under the influence of these systems, many places in Tamil Nadu saw light to moderate rain with isolated heavy rain, while scattered light rain was observed over Kerala. Also, light to moderate rain was witnessed over extreme south Karnataka.

Kerala has received 40% excess rain with Kasaragod recording 98% excess rainfall this season from October 1 to November 9. The other districts which have recorded high excess rainfall are Ernakulam, Kozhikode, Kottayam and Kannur with 65-75% excess rain. Thiruvananthapuram and Idukki have a near normal rainfall only during a season in which the southern districts get more rainfall than northern region. Neighbouring Lakshadweep islands, which bore the brunt of cyclone Maha last week, have recorded 177% excess rainfall.

Meanwhile, on Saturday, Aryankavu (Kollam) received 3cm rain while Kanjirappally (Kottayam), Piravom (Ernakulam), Kodungallur ( Thrissur ), Kollengode (Palakkad) got 1cm each. No large change in minimum temperature occurred during the past 24 hours. Punalur & Vellanikkara reported the lowest minimum of 22 degree C.
