Cyclone Maha: Several Districts in Maharashtra Under Yellow Watch for Thunderstorms

As the severe Cyclone Maha approaches Gujarat coast , light to moderate rainfall has been forecast across Madhya Maharashtra and Konkan region till Thursday. The storm is currently located 390 km away from Porbandar in Gujarat and is likely to weaken into a deep depression by Thursday morning.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow level watch across several districts of Maharashtra meaning ‘be updated’.

Palghar, Thane, Raigad, Ratnagiri, Sindhudurg, Nasik, Ahmednagar, Pune, Kolhapur, Satara and Sangli are the districts under yellow watch till Thursday. Thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds of up to 40 kmph are forecast in isolated places in these districts.

Rains are likely to continue till Saturday in north Madhya Maharashtra due to remnants of the storm. Along with thunderstorm, risks of lightning and strong winds are also very high in the region.

Heeding to the warnings from regional met centres, the coastal district of Palghar has announced three-day holiday for schools and colleges from Wednesday to Friday. Fishers have been asked to return to the coast and not venture out into the sea. The navy has also prepared for relief operations by mobilising four warships along the coast of Gujarat and Maharashtra.

After a record rainfall during the monsoon season, the post-monsoon rains have also been above-normal across Maharashtra. The state has received 180 mm rainfall since October 1 as against the normal of 75 mm—142% above-normal.

Heavy post-monsoon rains over Maharashtra have resulted in huge losses for farmers to the tune of ₹5,000 crores . While abundant showers at the end of the monsoon season had given farmers hopes of sufficient yield, the unexpected post-monsoon rains caught many off-guard. Most farmers failed to shift the produce from harvested crops to dry locations in time.
