Cyclone Nisarga: Only 19 flights to be operated from Mumbai

Mumbai: Mumbai's international airport will only operate 19 flights on Wednesday (June 3) instead of 50 flights it operates daily, due to cyclone Nisarga. The airport will operate only 11 departures and eight arrivals, due to uncertain weather conditions caused by the cyclone. The 19 flights will be operated by five airlines, including Air Asia India, Air India, IndiGo, GoAir, and SpiceJet.

Note that all domestic flights are operational from T2.

Currently, only 50 flights - 25 arrivals and 25 departures - are allowed from the Mumbai airport under a curtailed scheduled after domestic flight operations were restarted from May 25. The airport operator said, "Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) will be operating 19 flights, which include 11 departures and 8 arrivals on Wednesday (June 3). The flights will be operated by five airlines including Air Asia India, Air India, IndiGo, GoAir and SpiceJet. There could be changes to the schedule and passengers are requested to check the schedule with their respective airline before leaving for the airport.”

 

The authority cautioned passengers about probable changes in the schedule of the flights due to the cyclone and urged them to check with their respective airlines before leaving for the airport on June 3. On Tuesday, IndiGo airlines had cancelled 17 out of its 20 flights to and from Mumbai.

Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) tweeted saying, "Dear passengers, all flights as on 2nd June are as per schedule. However, passengers travelling on 3rd June are requested to check the flight schedule with their airlines before leaving home, as the schedule may change depending on the weather conditions."

Spicejet also tweeted an advisory which said, "Due to the cyclonic storm 'Nisarga' Spicejet's flight operations at the Mumbai (BOM) airport may get affected. Passengers are requested to keep a tab on their flight status from the aforementioned airport." The airline will communicate any cancellation or changes in the flight schedule via email or SMS.

Indigo in its travel advisory said, "Due to cyclonic movement 'Nisarga', flight operations to/from Mumbai, Pune, Shirdi and Surat are likely to be impacted. Any changes/cancellations will be notified via email/SMS."

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has said that Cyclone Nisarga is likely to make landfall at Alibaug, some 100 km south of Mumbai, today afternoon. The cyclone will also hit the Gujarat coast around at the same time and the state government has stepped up evacuation efforts in vulnerable areas.

An alert has been issued for Mumbai city and suburbs, Thane, Palghar, Raigad, Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg districts. Cyclone `Nisarga' is very likely to intensify into a "severe cyclonic storm" over the next 12 hours and cross Maharashtra and South Gujarat coast on Wednesday afternoon, IMD said on Tuesday.
