Dahod school ceiling falls apart, four hurt

VADODARA: Four children were hurt in a school in Dahod district when lumps of concrete fell on them from ceiling of the classroom they were studying in. Some rooms of the school are in a bad shape for quite some time now.

The incident took place at Lilvadeva village primary school of Jhalod taluka in the district.

At around 10am, concrete came off from a large portion of the ceiling and fell on the students below. Four students of standard IV in the school were injured. The injuries, however, were minor.

The district primary education officer and other officials rushed to the school. It has come to light that the issue of bad condition of the classrooms had been raised with the officials and the work for making new classrooms was in the pipeline.

School principal Jitendra Labana said the school has 10 classrooms. Six of these were constructed between 1986 and 1990 while the remaining in 2013-14. The condition of the older classrooms was bad.

“I had written about the condition of the classrooms and informed those concerned last year. I have been told that a proposal for three classrooms had been taken up and was in the pipeline,” Labana said. He added that the old classrooms will be razed.
