Dakor: Kin take 95-year-old to bank on handcart for his thumbprint to withdraw money

Wife alleges she was asked by officials of Dena Bank, Dakor, to bring husband along for his thumbprint to withdraw money

In dire need of money, the family of a bed-ridden 95-year-old in Dakor had to reportedly take him to the bank on a handcart in the scorching heat.

According to sources, the nonagenarian, Ranchhod Thakor, was left bed-ridden by a paralytic attack.

He has an account at Dena Bank, Dakor branch. On Monday, hoping to withdraw money from his account, his wife went to the bank but was allegedly asked to bring the account holder along for his thumb impression.

With no means of transport available due to the lockdown, the desperate family had to take Thakor to the bank on a handcart.

In a video shared with Mirror, an elderly woman, presumably Thakor’s wife, is heard saying she had gone to the bank (Dena Bank) but was asked to get the account holder along. The family lives in Gopalpura area of Dakor. Since Thakor cannot walk because of paralysis, in the absence of any other means of transport, they laid him on a handcart and walked to the bank in the heat, the woman in tow. There, he was made to give his thumb impression on the cart itself after which he got the money—around Rs 3,800.

No one contacted us: Senior bank manager

When Mirror contacted the senior manager of Dena Bank, Hasmukh Mahar, he said, “These are just allegations. No one had come to us with any such complaint. We have bank mitra to help such senior citizens and we go to their places if we receive such requests.” He added, “We are trying to find out the facts as it has now become a matter of integrity for the bank and me.”

According to Mahar, Thakor’s age is 87 and he had come to close his bank account by withdrawing all his money, which was about Rs 3,800. They had helped him with it. “Had I been informed about his health, I would have sent my peon to his place,” he said.
