Dakshina Kannada SVEEP plans 40 km human chain on seashore

MANGALURU: Dakshina Kannada Systematic Voters’ Education and Electoral Participation ( SVEEP ) Committee will organise a novel campaign to increase the polling percentage in the Lok Sabha election. The committee is gearing up to hold a 40 km long human chain on the seashore from Thalappady to Sasihitlu on April 7.


The committee headed by Dakshina Kannada zilla panchayat CEO R Selvamani and deputy commissioner S Sasikanth Senthil , who is also the returning officer, have held meetings with various educational institutions, NGOs and other organisations to make the event successful.

Selvamani said three nodal officers have been appointed to hold the huge human chain on the seashore stretch from Thalappady to Sasihitlu. While one nodal officer will be given the responsibility of the seashore in Ullal from Thalappady to Kotepura, another officer will be monitoring the stretches in Mangaluru city. Similalry, one nodal officer has been appointed for the seashore stretch from Panambur to Sasihitlu, he said.

People from all sections of society, including students, will take part in the human chain. While participants will be reaching their respective venue by 4pm, the human chain will continue till 5pm. While people will be standing on the seashore to form the human chain, fishermen will take part in the initiative with their boats at estuaries. Banners and SVEEP campaign materials will be used at places where people are not able to form a human chain. Staff of New Mangalore Port will be requested to take part in the human chain inside the port. A detailed plan will be prepared after holding meetings with all stakeholders again, he added.

DC Sasikanth Senthil said, “Human chain is a novel concept adopted by the Dakshina Kannada SVEEP committee. Since beaches are the USP of Dakshina Kannada, we have chosen to hold the human chain on the seashore. We will face a lot of challenges, but will make the event successful with the participation of people. I am sure that the event will help in increasing the voting percentage in the election.”
