Dalit woman ends life after 'torture' by Bharatpur cops

ALWAR/JAIPUR: A 35-year-old Dalit woman committed suicide on Tuesday after she was allegedly tortured by the Bharatpur police. Cops allegedly picked her up for questioning, but continued to threaten her even after she was released. Unable to bear the torture and humiliation, she killed herself, claimed her kin.

Following her husband’s elopement with a woman from the neighbourhood, Sewar Police picked up Amita Devi for questioning, suspecting that she knew his whereabouts. During interrogation, Amita was allegedly thrashed and humiliated by cops who told her that they would question and beat her up again if she didn’t give up her husband’s location.

After her release, Amita narrated her ordeal to her younger sister. The 35-yearold then locked herself in her room and was found hanging from the ceiling on Tuesday morning, her sister said. The family demanded a probe into the role of Sewar police personnel in abetting the death, following which, an inquiry was ordered.
