RAMBAN: Eight people including three girls died as the Tata Sumo taxi they were travelling in rolled down into a deep gorge in Ramban district on Saturday.

A teenage girl injured in a road accident in Ramban district on Saturday succumbed around midnight, taking the death toll to eight.

SSP Ramban Anita Sharma confirmed that a Tata Sumo, JK03A 3777, carrying eight passengers, including the driver, and en route to Alinbass from Ukhral, slipped into a ravine at Morh Mutilihal. As a result, four persons were killed on the spot, whereas four others sustained injuries.

Two among the injured succumbed to their injuries on way to the hospital, while two others were airlifted to Government Medical College and Hospital, Jammu, where one of them succumbed during treatment, she said.

The deceased have been identified as Neelofar Bano, 16, daughter of Mohammed Ashraf Jaral of Khudmalla Danmasta, Tarda Devi, 54, wife of Dhyan Chand of Batote, Sanvi Devi, 10, daughter of Subash Singh of Krimchi, Mohammad Iqbal Jaral of Alinbass, driver Javed Ahmed Jaral, 45, of Alinbass Bati and Sandeep Singh of Alinbass, Faizan Ahmad Jaral, 14, son of Farooq Ahmed Jaral and Raahat Ashraf, 19, daughter of Mohammed Ashraf Jaral.

Faizan died at a government medical college and hospital in Jammu and Raahat Ashraf died at a military hospital in Udhampur late Saturday night.

Reportedly, the taxi was being driven “negligently” and the driver lost control. The matter is under investigation now.
