Delhi-Amritsar NH sans streetlights, commuters face a tough time

Ludhiana: The 1.5 to 2 km long stretch on the Delhi-Amritsar national highway near the Kali Sadak is testing patience of commuters due to the absence of streetlights.

Poles are installed on the flyover, but there are no lights. Commuters have been facing a tough time due to the absence lighting on the highway.

Commuters complained that stray cattle came on roads and it was risky to drive on the stretch starting from the Milan palace till the Kali Sadak.

However, Congress MLA from the East constituency Sanjay Talwar said he had raised the matter several times with the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) to get lights installed on the stretch, but to no avail.

A commuter and a resident of the Chandigarh Road, Harish Chabra, said: “There are not bulbs or LED lights on the poles from a long time. This stretch has become a dark zone.”

He said several snatching incidents had also taken place on the stretch in the past.

“We fear that it will not be safe to drive on this stretch in the upcoming foggy weather,” he added.

Another commuter and a resident of Lakkar Bazar, Robin Chugh, said the authorities seemed to be playing with the lives of people by ignoring the basic requirements.

He said lights remained non-functional on the entire stretch of the highway and nobody was worried about people who passed through this stretch.

MLA Talwar said: “I have written many letters to the officials of the NHAI and spoke to personally, nothing has been done so far. They say that the flyover at the Basti Jodhewal is about to be completed after which streetlights will be installed.”

However, former MLA from the East constituency and district president of Akali Dal Ranjit Dhillon, said: “Not only this stretch, but streetlights were not functional on the Jagraon Bridge.”
