Delhi BJP chief Manoj Tiwari flouts lockdown norms; reaches Haryana's Sonipat to play cricket

New Delhi: Flouting lockdown norms, Delhi BJP chief Manoj Tiwari on Monday reached Sonipat in Haryana to play cricket when the borders of two states are sealed to contain the spread of the novel coronavirus.

Not only Tiwari broke the lockdown, but also violated social distancing norms as he was seen playing cricket without a mask which has been made mandatory by the government.

He was also seen singing, posing for selfies and interacting with a group of people without wearing a mask during the event in Sonipat.

According to the reports, the BJP leader reached the unique cricket stadium in Sheikhpura village of Sonepat on the invitation of the stadium owner.

This came at a time when the Haryana government has sealed the border with Delhi citing increase in the number of cases due to people coming from Delhi into the state.

Haryana government had imposed restrictions in the last week of April after spikes in the cases of Covid-19. Some of the green districts like Jhajjar came in the red zone. Sonepat, Faridabad and Gurugram also witnessed a steep surge in corona cases.

On April 28, Haryana Minister Anil Vij had claimed that the state will be in a comfortable position as far as coronavirus outbreak is concerned if borders stay sealed.

Vij confirmed that Haryana's borders with Delhi have been sealed, however, essential services are being allowed. The Haryana Health Minister said stricter restrictions have been put in place for those entering Haryana.

"The state's borders have been sealed. Essential services will be allowed. If all the borders of Haryana stay sealed for 15-20 days, the state will be in a comfortable situation (in terms of coronavirus threat)," Vij told PTI.

India is currently under the fourth phase of coronavirus-induced lockdown. While the Centre has released the curb, wearing a mask in public places has been kept mandatory.
