Delhi Police Special Cell busts inter-state drug cartel; two arrested with 12-kg opium

New Delhi: Special Cell of Delhi Police has busted an inter-state narcotic drug cartel and seized 12 kilograms of opium procured from Naxalite affected areas of Jharkhand. Two people have been arrested and the investigators claim that the gang got e-passes issued from SDM Hoshiarpur and misused these passes by smuggling narcotic drugs from Jharkhand.

"One such e-pass issued for their Etios car has been recovered from the arrested duo. Members of this cartel have succeeded in smuggling more than 50 kgs Opium into Delhi and Punjab during the lockdown period," an official said.

According to police, on May 29, they got information that two members of the cartel were on their way to Delhi after collecting consignment of opium from Hazaribagh in Jharkhand.

A trap was laid near Burari Chowk

"A trap was laid near Burari Chowk and Etios car came from ISBT side stopped near Burari Chowk. During checking the drugs were found hidden inside the cavity of the car," police said, adding that they have arrested the accused in the case. They were identified as Shan Masih and Chetan Patil.

During their interrogation, the accused claimed that this was their third trip for smuggling opium in Delhi and Punjab from Jharkhand by misusing e-passes issued for transporting migrant labourers during the lockdown period. "Part of the opium was to be delivered to one of their contacts in Burari, Delhi and remaining Opium was to be supplied in Punjab," police said.

Further investigation is on to identify other suspects involved in the racket.
