Delhi: Relaxations sought at Karol Bagh

NEW DELHI: Economic slowdown because of the lockdown may undo the work done towards pedestrianising Ajmal Khan Road in Karol Bagh.

Facing extremely low footfall and sustaining losses, the traders ' body is now demanding the civic body to allow vehicles on the road. Golf carts were earlier used to ferry people between the parking lots and the market, but people have now stopped using them, say the traders.

Murali Mani, president of Ajmal Khan Road Market Traders Association, said that there are 300 shops in the market half of which open on alternate days. But people are not willing to come and one of the reasons may be lack of access by vehicles. "Metro has remained closed and people cannot use cars to come to the shops. We held a meeting of the traders and all of us have decided to request the authorities to at least allow drop off till the shops," he added.

Mani said that the association will put two teams of security guards at the two ends of the stretch who can issue tokens to vehicles entering the road. "If a vehicle does not leave the market and go towards the parking area after 15 minutes, they can be fined. Because of the risk of Covid-19, people are not using e-ricks and golf carts," he added.
