Denied bike by parents, youngster jumps to death in Varuna Canal

Mandya: A 24-year-old man, disappointed with his parents for refusing to buy him a bike , allegedly plunged to his death in the Varuna Canal near Krishnaraja Sagar (KRS) Dam in Srirangapatna taluk on Friday night. Mandya police have identified the victim as Rakesh, a resident of Hudco Layout in Mysuru.

Rakesh, along with two of his friends, visited Varuna Canal on Friday evening.

Rakesh allegedly gave his two friends no visible sign of what he was planning to do. When the three of them were engrossed in a discussion, without any warning, Rakesh allegedly leapt into the waters of the canal. His shocked friends tried to save him, but the strong currents in the canal, coupled with the dark, made spotting their friend near impossible.

Mandya police opined that Rakesh must have been swept by the sheer force of the current. Police have enlisted the assistance of expert divers, and a search for the victim’s body is under way. A case has been registered in connection with the incident at the KRS police station.
