Deoria murder over loud music: 5 cops suspended, 6 sent to lines

Gorakhpur: Five policemen were suspended while six others were attached to police lines for negligence after a 28-year-old man was beaten to death in Barahaj area of Deoria for objecting to playing of DJ outside his house during Janmashtami celebrations on Saturday midnight.

Section 144 has been clamped in Barahaj police station area and heavy police force has been deployed to maintain peace.

All the six accused have been arrested.

Addressing a press conference on Monday, superintendent of police, Deoria, Dr Sripati Mishra said: “Action has been taken against 11 policemen for negligence of duty. Playing of DJ is banned in the state but Barhaj police station in charge Shivshankar Chaube, Kasba police post in charge Onkarnath Pandey and beat constables Amardeep Chauhan didn’t take the matter seriously.”

“There was an altercation over playing of DJ and constables of Dial 100 service Shailesh Singh and Vijay Kumar reached the spot but did not take any effective action. Five policemen have been suspended with immediate effect and six cops of Barhaj Kasba police post have been attached to police lines,” the SP said.

A group led by Pradyuman Gupta and others were taking out a procession and playing loud music on a mini-truck in Patel Nagar when a local resident Munnu Jaiswal requested them to stop the music as his daughter-in-law was pregnant and feeling unwell.

Jaiswal also complained on Dial 100 service after which the police intervened and stopped the group from playing music.

However, after the constables left, some drunken youths played the music again and started dancing in front of the house.

Jaiswal’s younger son Sumit got enraged over this and lashed out at them. The youths attacked Sumit with sticks and bricks. Local rushed Sumit to the hospital where the doctors pronounced him dead.

On the complaint of Munnu Jaiswal, police lodged an FIR against six people under sections 147 (rioting), 148 (rioting, armed with deadly weapon), 149 (unlawful assembly), 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), 504 (intentional insult), 506 (criminal intimidation), 304 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder), 34 (common intention) of the IPC and arrested the accused.

The six accused were identified as Pradyuman aka Deepak Gupta, Iftekhar Ahman, Fayyaz, Haider Ali, Durga Gupta and Chhedi Madhesia. Police have recovered sticks used in killing.
