Dewas forest division pulls out all the stops to get CA|TS tag

INDORE: An action plan prepared by Dewas forest division on tiger conservation for accreditation under Conservation Assured Tiger Standards (CA|TS) site, was assessed for compliance by a team of three experts.

Under the CA|TS, a tiger conservation area is encouraged to meet a set of standards and criteria created by an international group of experts and protected area managers for effective and long term tiger conservation.

The assessment was carried out in the area by Global Tiger Forum and World Wildlife Federation, after the Dewas forest division registered for accreditation and prepared a detailed action plan for tiger conservation. CA|TS provides an opportunity for individual tiger conservation areas to demonstrate their commitment and success in protecting tigers.

A three-member committee comprising former PCCF in Tamil Nadu Rajeev Shrivastav and representatives from GTF and WWF Arun Kumar and Supriya Kochar respectively studied the landscape for over four days from April 8.

“We assessed the area during the stay and it is a potential tiger area,” Shrivastav said.

The assessment was carried out on target set for tiger conservation in the area. “If the area gets CA|TS tag, it will help international funding for tiger conservation activities here. It will also put Dewas division on priority list for tiger conservation in India,” DFO Dewas PN Mishra said.

The compliance report of the action plan will be reviewed by a national committee before the CA|TS status is accorded.

Forest department had been making efforts for a long time to sustain tiger population in Kheoni Wildlife Sanctuary of Dewas. The department is now planning to train its staff on tiger management from the Satpura Tiger Reserve.
