Dhanbad nurse among 8 Covid deaths, record no. of recoveries

Ranchi: A frontline anti-Covid worker -- the 48-year-old chief nurse of railway hospital in Dhanbad – was among the eight coronavirus casualties recorded in Jharkhand on Wednesday, when the state toll crossed the 200-mark and the caseload breached the 20,000-mark with 788 fresh cases detected in 24 hours until 10pm.



The nurse had tested positive for Covid-19 and was admitted to Rims Covid-19 block after she was referred from a Dhanbad hospital. Two weeks ago, a police personnel on Covid-19 duty has died at Paras Hospital and an India Reserve Battalion personnel succumbed to the infection at Rims on August 8.

Rims sources said the nurse was suffering from lung ailments and had developed Acute Respiratory Deficiency Syndrome (ARDS) before she was shifted to the hospital and admitted to the ICU on Monday. “She was deployed at the ICU of Dhanbad railway hospital. The other two casualties at Rims -- from Hazaribag and Ranchi -- were in coma at the time of admission,” said a health department official.

East Singhbum again recorded the highest number of casualties – five, taking the district toll to 78. “All of them were suffering from different comorbidities,” said an official.

Of the new infections in the state in 24 hours, 109 were reported late on Tuesday. Of the 679 cases on Wednesday, East Singhbhum continued to top the list with 177 infections while Ranchi reported 119 new patients. The temple town Deoghar saw a spike with 53 fresh cases, followed by Dhanbad with 41. Even as state reported 1,567 recoveries, the positivity rate of samples tested was 10.8% with 6,272 reports returning positive.

The total number of Covid-19 cases in Jharkhand rose to 20,257, of which 7,858 are active, 12,197 have recovered and 202 have died.
