Did Cable Car in Haridwar Catch Fire? No, the Claim is Unrelated

CLAIM

A viral video on social media claims that a cable car in Haridwar’s Mansa Devi caught fire and led to several people to be allegedly burnt alive.

The claim along with the video reads:

हरिद्वार के मनसा देवी झूले में आग लग जाने से लोग जिन्दा जले....बहुत दर्दनाक एक्सीडेंट’’

(Translated: As a ropeway in Haridwar’s Mansa Devi caught fire, several people were burnt alive. It’s a very sad accident)

Several social media users shared the video on Facebook and Twitter with the same claim.

TRUE OR FALSE?

The claim around the video is false. The incident did not happen in Haridwar. It took place during a TV show’s shoot when a crew member used a firecracker without prior permission.

WHAT WE FOUND OUT

We did a frame-to-frame analysis using InVID, a video verification tool, and then reverse-searched each frame on Google. The Google search led us to a YouTube that was uploaded in 2015 and titled as ‘Ropeway accident/Most Dangerous and Shocking Accident.’

The Google search led us to a YouTube video published in 2015.

While tracking the comments on this video, a user had pointed that it is from Israel.

A user had commented on the video hinting that it’s from Israel.

Consequently, we did a YouTube search using keywords ‘Jerico Calbe car, Israel,’ which led us to a published in 2015 by Ten News.

The news channel had uploaded the same video in 2015.

On searching for news reports using the same keywords, we found an article published by news organisation Metro.

The article published in 2015 mentioned that a cable car in Palestine caught fire while shooting for a TV show as the production assistant used a firecracker without prior permission.
