District Tourism Promotion Council launches helicopter service for cruise tourists

Kochi: District Tourism Promotion Council (DTPC), Ernakulam has introduced helicopter service from Willingdon Island for tourists who come on cruise ships.

The decision was made to add more attractive experiences to cruise tourists who reach the region. The helicopter service will be provided by a private firm in association with DTPC, Kerala Tourism and Greenix Village–Centre for Cultural Tourism in Fort Kochi .

“Those who come on cruise ship, have just about three-five hours to spend on land. So, we decided to introduce helicopter services so that they can get a quick aerial view of Kerala,” said Vijaya Kumar S, secretary, DTPC, Ernakulam.

The trip is for three-five hours and the average cost varies from Rs 60,000-70,000 per person, depending on the ride.

The helicopter service was inaugurated on Wednesday by Cochin Port Trust chairperson Dr M Beena. About 50 passengers took the helicopter ride.

“Almost 25% passengers arriving on cruise ships come again. Therefore, we decided to introduce more tours and interesting experiences in the itinerary. We have identified Munnar and Jatayu Earth Centre as new destinations and the helicopters will be operating trips to these tourist sites,” added Beena.

Cochin Port is among the most favourite cruise destinations in India. In the year 2018-19, 49 international cruise ships visited Cochin Port carrying a total of 62,753 passengers and 28,828 crew members. It has been the highest ever cruise call in any port.

The rides were sponsored by Steamer Agents association, Cochin Customs Brokers Association, Indian Chamber of Commerce and Seafood Exporters Association. A special ride was also arranged for cancer survivors along with well-known oncologist Dr VP Gangadharan.

“The helicopter rides have evoked very good response from cruise passengers as well as tour operators,” said Beena.
