DMK protests against state government, cops

Coimbatore: More than 100 cadres of DMK staged a protest near Thiruvalluvar Thidal in Pollachi on Friday, condemning the AIADMK government and police for registering false cases against its members.

The protest was led by district secretary (Coimbatore south) Thendral Selvaraj.

During the protest, Selvaraj said more than 50 false cases were registered against DMK cadres in the last nine years in the state.

“We have been urging the local body officials to repair roads, provide proper drinking water and drainage facilities across the district, including in Pollachi, Valparai , Kinathukedavu and Sulur. But, till date, no action has been taken,” he said.

The underground drainage (UGD) work being carried out in Pollachi for the past two years has been causing inconvenience to the public, he said. Despite several complaints, local body officials had failed to act, he added.

Meanwhile, DMK Singanallur MLA N Karthik in a statement said his party would continue to protest in a democratic way to protect the rights of the public and to attract the attention of the government in resolving public issues.

“All the alliance parties of DMK, social activists and public have raised objections for handing over 24/7 water supply project to a French company,” he said, pointing out that his party had first raised the issue in June 2018.

With no council in place, the corporation had signed the agreement with the private company for 26 years without getting opinion from the public and political parties, he said.

He said the corporation should submit a white paper on the agreement. He also condemned the state government for increasing property tax .
