Doda Basti residents suffer due to faulty drainage system

Residents of Doda Basti in Belicharana are suffering a lot due to the ongoing monsoons as nearly 400 houses in the area are half-submerged due to the incessant rains.

To make matters worse, the drainage system in the area has not been working due to the alleged administrative apathy.

“This is not the first time that we have approached the authorities concerned to maintain a proper drainage system so that water could drain out of the area, but to no avail,” said Maan Singh Parihar, a Doda migrant.

He said after repeated requests to the department concerned, the people of Doda Basti only got assurances, but nothing happened on ground.

“Nearly 650m-long drainage system is required to be constructed and maintained in the area. The authorities only come with the explanation about a tender being floated for construction, but all remains on paper,” said Parihar.

He said after a deluge happened in the area which brought hardships to school-going children and commuters, he approached the executive engineer, who again promised re-tendering the project.

Residents say since the Doda migrant basti is in an area of depression, filth, scum and drainwater accumulate here, giving rise to water-borne diseases.
