Drone deployed to foil locust attack in Ashoknagar

BHOPAL: Locust warning organization (LWO) personnel from Faridabad deployed drone in Ashoknagar to spray insecticide on new swarms of the tiddi dal– spread over almost 3 sq km area- on the hills.

Different swarms were active for the past four days in the region. It started from May 31 when the locust swarms were first sighted in the city.

Local unit of the agriculture department used fire brigades to spray insecticide.

SK Mahor, deputy director agriculture in Ashoknagar said, “the insects were spread over two regions in Ashoknagar. They included Fatehabad and the hills of Chanderi.” The swarms of the insect hovering over the planes were taken care of by the chemicals sprayed by the fire tenders. But, it was difficult to handle the locust swarming over the hills. When the insects were first spotted on May 31, LWO in Faridabad was informed. “The officials of the LWO rushed to Ashoknagar along with drone,” Mahor said.

He said that LWO deployed the drone on the hills and sprayed the chemicals effectively killing a large number. However, the insects damaged many trees. He said there was no crop in the fields so there was no question of crop damage.

Ashoknagar is about 230 kms away from Sheopur, tribal dominated district of MP bordering Rajasthan.
