East Rajasthan: Rains Set to Intensify in Udaipur, Ajmer by Sunday

Rains in east Rajasthan are set to intensify. By Sunday, there is a possibility of ‘very heavy’ rainfall in districts like Ajmer, Udaipur, Chittorgarh and Jhalawar, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has said. While heavy rain should remain restricted to isolated places, thunderstorms with light-to-moderate rainfall may be seen in many parts of eastern Rajasthan.

The monsoon trough (low pressure belt) currently extends from Jaisalmer in Rajasthan, across Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh, to Jharsuguda district in Odisha. There is also an upper-level cyclonic circulation over north Haryana and neighbourhood. These could be influencing the recent spell of wet weather being experienced by parts of the state.

Rajasthan has had a good monsoon season this year. The eastern part of the state has received 41% excess rainfall as on September 5, while western Rajasthan got 20% surplus rain. Ajmer and Sikar in east Rajasthan have recorded 90% and 85% excess rain respectively while Nagaur and Pali (W. Rajasthan) have received the highest excess at 62% and 52% respectively. Overall, the state has recorded 494.5 mm since June 1, 2019, against a long-term average of 370.1 mm.

The rainfall is also reflected in dam levels in the state. On September 6, according to the state’s water resources department, Rajasthan’s dams are at 81.7% capacity compared to 54.44% on the same date last year. On June 15, 2019, close to the start of the monsoon, the dams were just under 27% full. Dams in Kota and Udaipur are around the 90% mark.
