Eight peacocks found dead in Aravalli

PALANPUR: Six peacocks and two peahens were found dead in Vaiya village, five km from Meghraj town in Aravalli district on Friday.


"Preliminary investigation suggested that the birds died after consuming some toxic substance. One peahen is still under treatment," said Ajaysinh Rathod, range forest officer (RFO), Meghraj.



Forest officials are also interrogating Bhimaji Ninama, the farmer in whose field the birds died. The carcass was disposed after postmortem.

Peacock enjoys protected status under schedule I of the Indian Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972 and killing the bird is punishable under section 51(1-A) with imprisonment that may extend to seven years, and financial penalty.
