BARASAT: Dengue continues to haunt the Habra-Ashoknagar belt of North 24 Parganas, claiming a 26-year-old on Tuesday night. Jayanta Pal had been admitted to Apollo Gleneagles Hospitals on Sunday after he was shifted from a private nursing home in Barasat .

The resident of ward 2 under Ashoknagar Kalyanagar Municipality (AKM) was initially admitted to Ashoknagar State General Hospital with fever last Thursday, He was then shifted to a private nursing home where his blood samples tested positive to dengue.

As his condition deteriorated, he was moved to Apollo on Sunday. His family members said Pal’s death certificate mentions dengue shock syndrome as the cause of death.

This is the eighth dengue death in the Habra Ashoknagar belt this year. Many others are admitted at Ashonagar State General Hospital and Basarat District Hospital with fever. Most of them are reportedly suffering from dengue fever . The municipality authorities admitted there was a dengue crisis in surrounding areas.

“In 2018, we had taken up massive combative measures and there was no death. But this year there has been a delay in taking preventive steps. Now all 23 wards under the municipality are affected by dengue. There are at least 50 people being treated for dengue at Ashoknagar State General Hospital. The situation is going out of hand,” said AKM chairman Prabodh Sarkar.
