Election 2019: Man carries his 87-year-old differently-abled mother to polling booth in Malda

Voting for the third phase of Lok Sabha elections started on Tuesday morning across 117 seats, spread across 13 states and 2 union territories. In the seven-phased elections, more than 18 crores 85 lakh voters will determine the fate of 1,640 candidates.

For the smooth conduct of polls, over 2,10 lakh polling stations have been set up all over the country, and people, irrespective of caste, creed, colour, religion, are turning up in good numbers to exercise their democratic right.

The enthusiasm to vote is particularly high this year among senior citizens in the country.

Today, as voting got underway in West Bengal for 5 Lok Sabha seats, a man carried his 87-year-old differently-abled mother to the polling booth in Kotwali Primary Junior Basic School, in Malda, reported ANI.

Pictures of the man and his mother have now gone viral on social media.

 

 

A 102-year-old Sargul Bibi, who hails from Hailakandi district in South Assam, has been casting her vote since the 1950s. She has never missed exercise of her franchise since then.

Another centenarian, 108-year-old Dharam Singh cast his vote in Thathri in Doda district of Jammu and Kashmir.

Similarly, a 100-year-old Wangkheimayum Bhanu from Manipur also cast her vote. The Chief Electoral Officer of Manipur took to Twitter to say, "100-year-old Wangkheimayum Bhanu making sure to be a part of the largest election on earth."

In Karnataka, 107-year-old Padma awardee, Saalumarada Thimmakka cast her vote for the Bangalore Rural parliamentary constituency.
