Employee injured as criminals open fire in Samastipur court

PATNA: An employee of Samastipur civil court was seriously injured when motorbike-borne criminals opened fire on the court premises on Monday. An undertrial prisoner, Ashok Yadav, stated to be Samastipur district vice-president of RJD, had a narrow escape.

The incident took place around 2.30 pm when Ashok, facing charges of murder, loot, kidnapping and extortion, was being escorted by four policemen to the court hazat after he was produced in the family court for a divorce case.

Two youths riding a motorbike appeared on the scene and fired at him from close range. However, the bullets missed the target and hit Prabhu Prakash Toppo, who was walking behind Ashok. A constable, deployed on the court premises, fired at the assailants but they managed to escape.

Toppo, a grade IV employee, had gone to the family court to submit some official documents when the incident took place. He was rushed to the sadar hospital for treatment.

Samastipur SP Vikas Burman said the miscreants escaped towards Sonbarsa. “The gang involved in the incident has already been identified and raids are on to arrest them,” he said, adding that CCTV footage has been obtained from the court premises and Ashok Yadav’s statement has been recorded to ascertain the reason behind the attack.
