Engagement broken over dowry

Ahmedabad: A woman resident of Shreeji Park, Vastral has lodged a complaint with Ramol police station against her fiancé and five others after they broke their engagement as the woman’s family couldn’t afford to meet their dowry demands of a house, a car, a 100 gram gold necklace, and an iPhone among other things. Malvika Banawadi, 24, has accused her ex-fiancé Darshal Tirkar, and his parents Dhiru Tirkar, Rekhaben, and three others Rituben, Nilesh and Dilip Tirkar of demanding exorbitant dowry before marriage and breaking her engagement with Darshal over dowry demands.



Ramol police officials said they have booked the accused and are probing the case. They said strict action will be taken if sufficient evidence is found in the case.

In her complaint, Banawadi has said she works in a private company in Changodar and she was engaged to Darshan Tirkar of Krishnanagar about five years ago. Since the engagement she used to go out with Darshan, whose parents, Dhiru an ex-armyman and Rekha, also used to come to their home.

Malvika has alleged that about a year after their engagement, Darshan told her to ask her father to get him an iPhone. Malvika told him that her parents couldn’t afford to buy him an iPhone.

Later, Darshan’s parents came to their house and told Malvika’s parents that they would have to give Darshan, an iPhone, gold ring, car and will have to buy him a house to live in.

According to the FIR they also demanded that Malvika be given a 100 gram gold necklace or else they would not fix a date for marriage. Malvika has mentioned that her parents told them that according to their financial condition they would do as much as possible.

Later when they pressed for their demands Malivika’s father refused and the Tirkars stopped talking to them. Darshan stopped calling Malvika once her family refused to meet the dowry demands.

Malvika stated that Nilesh and his friend Dilip Tirkar threatened Malvika’s family that if they wanted their daughter to be married to Darshan they would have to give in to their demands.

The accused also threatened that if Malvika’s family did not fulfil their demands, they would prevent Malvika and her brother Krunal from marrying in their community.
