Commentary
  • So, that's that from the 1st ODI then, it was a super entertainer, to say the least. Australia have romped home comfortably in the end. England will have a chance to make it even come the 2nd ODI. That happens on Sunday, 13th September 2020 at 1300 Local (1200 GMT). Do join us for that and until then, take care!
  • Josh Hazlewood is the PLAYER OF THE MATCH. He says that he really enjoyed bowling today. Hazlewood is pretty happy to have bowled with the new ball. He says that it was absolutely necessary to get it right at the very start, given the explosive opening combination of Roy and Bairstow that England possesses. Feels that he is happy to play fresh after the T20Is earlier. Says that Mitchell Marsh played really well today. After the practice matches, Hazlewood states that he was dying to get on the ground for the real action.
  • Eoin Morgan, the English skipper, says that the game slipped away from them in the first 10-12 overs which Australia bowled to them. Feels that England had a chance despite that but in the end, full credits to Australia for the way they played today. Lauds Sam Billings for his fortitude. Morgan believes that England should have kept taking wickets earlier when they bowled so that they could have restricted the total. Feels for Billings on not getting opportunities earlier. On Stokes, Morgan states that Stokes' absence is a big hole in the side, with both bat and ball.
  • Aaron Finch, Australia's captain, says that it was nice to win and that his side started just the way he wanted them to. Says that there were some cracks early on, in the pitch and that Archer bowled really well to exploit the same. He praises the partnership between Mitchell Marsh and Glenn Maxwell and that was key in them getting the total that they got.
  • For Australia, first of all, it was their batting and precisely the stand between Maxwell and Marsh which bailed them out from 123/5 to 294/9. Once they reached a target close to 300 their bowlers had enough in their kitty to play with and that is what exactly they did. The changing point for them was the 20 overs between Zampa and Hazlewood which closed the doors for England to win this game.
  • England, on the other hand, would be ruing the fact that they lost too many wickets first up to put the pressure on the middle order. Though Bairstow hung in there but it was a slow innings from him. He was not his usual self as he is while batting in ODIs. Not only wickets but rash shots, some good bowling from the opposition and fielding, in the end, turned out to be the X factor between the two sides. Because of which England found themselves on the losing side.
  • A win for Australia and all thanks to their bowlers. Starc and Hazlewood started brilliantly with the new ball, especially Josh who's two wickets in the initial period of chase pushed the hosts into a shell. Zampa then came in and stole the show with his 4 wickets. There was a period in the game where the Aussies struggled when Bairstow and Billings were batting but the dismissal of the former opened the gates for Australia and from then on It was always going to be Australia. Billings though fought hard with his ton but lack of support meant that he could not do much.

He was the only player who held his end still, almost saw his side but ends up holing out in the end. Fullish length ball on off, Billings looked to hoick that over mid-wicket. He gets the height but not the distance. It goes straight down the throat of David Warner at wide long on, who takes a good catch.
