With the backs to the wall, Joe Root found an able ally in Jos Buttler and together the pair put on a show. Pakistan got the opening they wanted and once Buttler also departed after completing his century, the Asian team grabbed the match by its throat. Wahab Riaz dismissing Moeen Ali and Chris Woakes off consecutive deliveries proved to be the final nail in the coffin and Pakistan emerged out as the deserving winners. Mohammad Amir and Shadab Khan also played crucial roles in this victory.
