Chelsea handed Wesley Fofana injury fear after France decision made


Chelsea defender Wesley Fofana has withdrawn from the France national team for the upcoming international break due to injury.

Fofana, 22, was handed his first call-up to the senior team by Didier Deschamps on Thursday after impressing upon his return to action. The defender played a huge role in the Blues' progress to the Champions League quarter-final and scored the winner against Leeds United.

However, in the final game ahead of the international break, Fofana was replaced by Trevoh Chalobah in the 87th minute after feeling his hamstring, Potter confirmed. And now, it has been confirmed he will miss the games with the Netherlands and Ireland.

A statement on the official 'Equipe de France' Twitter page confirmed that Monaco's Axel Disasi and OGC Nice's Jean-Clair Todibo have been called-up by Deschamps in place of Fofana and Arsenal's William Saliba.

Fofana's latest injury is the second he has picked up since signing for the club. He missed four months earlier in the season with a knee injury and only returned to the squad midway through February.

It's unclear how long Fofana faces out of action. With a Champions League quarter-final against Real Madrid taking place next month, there will be sincere hope that he will return after the two-week break.

"Wes Fofana had to come off with fatigue, as he has had a long time out," Potter explained. "He was feeling his hamstring. Wes was fantastic and defended well."
