Liverpool faces Tottenham transfer battle to sign $54m Mohamed Salah teammate

It seems just a matter of time now before Arne Slot is confirmed as the new Liverpool boss. He’ll almost certainly face a busy summer when he arrives at Anfield.

Slot has all but confirmed he will succeed Jürgen Klopp when the German leaves the Reds at the end of the season. The Feyenoord boss

appeared to be bidding farewell to the club’s supporters after their 5-0 win over PEC Zwolle on Sunday.

The 45-year-old will arrive at a club in a healthy position, having reclaimed a top-four spot after last season’s disappointment and with a number of players already in place for the future. Recent weeks though have shown there is still some work to be done.

Although the Reds rediscovered their scoring touch in the 4-2 win over Tottenham on Sunday, they have been misfiring in front of goal recently. That has led to suggestions that the attack could be bolstered as part of this summer’s business.

Reports from Germany suggest one option may have already been identified. According to Bild, Liverpool is interested in Eintracht Frankfurt star Omar Marmoush, although they could face competition from Sunday’s opponents.

Tottenham is also said to be in the running, with Frankfurt expecting bids to be table for the forward at some point. Marmoush, who plays his international football alongside Mohamed Salah with Egypt, has scored 16 goals and added six assists in 39 appearances this season.

The 25-year-old’s deal at Frankfurt runs until 2027. The Bundesliga side is reportedly ‘only willing to talk’ about selling him if there’s an offer of around $54m (£43m/€50m).

Liverpool.com says: Well, if Liverpool and Tottenham are both in the running for Marmoush, then it’s clear which side should hold the advantage. The Reds are guaranteed to be in next season’s Champions League, while Spurs look set to be in the Europa League — and even that might be in danger if their poor run of form continues.

Marmoush would be an interesting signing. According to Transfermarkt, his primary position is as a center-forward, although he can also play on the right or left wing. That would fit him in well at Liverpool, where interchanging with the other forwards is an important facet of the Reds’ play. We don’t know exactly how Slot plans to set up next season, but you’d imagine it would be similar to how Klopp currently shapes his team up.
