Asunta, a remarkably talented child known for her academic and artistic prowess, was adopted from China at just nine months old by Rosario Porto and Alfonso Basterra, both prominent figures in Santiago, Spain. Porto, a lawyer, and Basterra, a journalist, provided Asunta with a life filled with ballet, violin, piano, and language lessons, painting the picture of a perfect family.

However, beneath this facade of normalcy, darkness loomed. On September 21, 2013, days shy of her 13th birthday, Asunta was reported missing by her parents. Horribly, her body was discovered just hours later on a roadside near her home. The investigation quickly turned towards Porto and Basterra as inconsistencies in their accounts emerged. During the trial in October 2015, shocking details surfaced. The coroner reported that Asunta had been asphyxiated and had a lethal dose of Lorazepam, an anxiety medication, in her system—nine times what would be prescribed for an adult. It also came to light that she had been administered small doses of the drug over several months.

The jury found both parents guilty of murder, sentencing them to 18 years in prison. Throughout their incarceration, they maintained their innocence. The family's outward perfection was further debunked by revelations of Basterra's violence towards Porto and their deteriorating marital relationship. Porto, struggling with mental health issues and the loss of her parents, ultimately took her own life in November 2020. Basterra remains in prison.

The motive for Asunta's murder remains a mystery, despite the couple's troubled background. Netflix’s The Asunta Case, starring Candela Peña and Tristán Ulloa, dramatises these real-life events, exploring the depths of human complexity and the devastating betrayal of a child by those sworn to protect her. This six-part series not only revisits the tragic case but also attempts to understand the inexplicable, making it a profound viewing experience that shakes the core of our beliefs about family and trust.
